Description : The Associated Students of Modesto Junior College is hosting a Latino Comix Expo on March 15-16 in the Mary Stuart Rogers Student Center on West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Avenue, Modesto. The family-friendly, free Expo is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Parking on campus is also free for the two-day event.

The Expo, featuring vendors, workshops, panels, speakers and more, spotlights Latino cartoonists, animators, artists and writers.

The Friday program highlights include sessions on Latina Power, Lucha Libre comics, “Tales from La Vida,” comics in the classroom, an indie publisher roundtable and a spotlight on Jaime Hernandez.

The Saturday schedule of presentations includes a spotlight on “HOMIES” creator David Gonzales, "Para Los Nińos" children's books and a zine making workshop with Cathy Camper, creator of “Lowriders in Space” and Isabel Ann Castro, creator of “St. Sucia.” (A zine, short for magazine, is a small-circulation self-published work.)

The Expo also features cartoonist Jaime Hernandez, co-creator of the famous long-running series, “Love and Rockets” which was first published in 1981. “Love and Rockets” has since evolved into one of the great bodies of American literary fiction, spanning four decades and countless high-water marks in the medium's history. In 2017, Hernandez (along with his brother Gilbert Hernandez), was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame, and in 2018 he released his first children's book, the Aesop Book Prize-winning “The Dragon Slayer: Folktales from Latin America.”
