Description : The Human Services Program at Modesto Junior College is sponsoring a presentation by B.J. Davis, Psy.D, entitled "Why We Do What We Do: Choice Theory, A New Psychology of Personal Freedom" on Wednesday, April 11, at 5:30 p.m. in Forum 102 on East Campus, 435 College Avenue, Modesto.

Davis, a renowned author, professor and TEDx Sacramento speaker, is the first presenter in a two-part series titled “An Evening of Brilliance and Insight.” The public is invited to participate in this free event.

Davis is an advocate for challenging some of the long held myths about what works in substance abuse and offender re-entry programs and is active in conducting research that focuses on treatment effectiveness and outcomes. Davis often shares his story of hope and triumph that was made famous with his Sacramento TEDx talk that went viral.

Davis is the executive director of Strategies for Change Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Mental Health Treatment Agency, and an adjunct professor in the Forensic and Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at Alliant International University. He is the author of the 2009 DVD “What is Recovery? A Quality of Life Perspective.”

Davis serves as a consultant to the Sacramento Aids Housing Alliance, and is the past vice chair of the Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) Certification Board. In addition to a doctorate in psychology and a drug and alcohol certification, he has a dual B.A. in philosophy and religion, a Master of Arts in psychology and a Master of Science in community counseling.

In 2016 Davis received a governor’s appointment to the State Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and in December 2017, he received the Harold E. Cole Award for Outstanding Contribution in the field of alcohol and other drug abuse outreach, prevention and treatment by the Sacramento County Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board.
