An Evening of Culinary & Cabernet Brilliance at Surla’s Restaurant

Modesto, are you ready for a taste of pure culinary magic? I recently had the pleasure of attending an extraordinary Louis M. Martini Wine Dinner at our very own Surla’s Restaurant; it was an experience that truly showcased the best of our local food scene intertwined with world-class wines.

For those who haven’t yet discovered it, Surla’s is a Modesto gem nestled just a few blocks from the core downtown. Don’t let its slightly off-the-beaten-path location deter you – you absolutely won’t be disappointed!

Chef John Surla: A True Modesto Treasure

One of the highlights of any visit to Surla’s is the opportunity to meet Chef John Surla himself. He’s one of the most genuinely warm and kind Chef/Owners in our region, making it a point to greet every guest, remember their names, and truly care about their dining experience. He’s a true professional, and if you ever hear that Chef Surla is catering an event, you know the food will be nothing short of fantastic! The restaurant atmosphere, always warm and comfortable, combined with his incredible staff, makes for an instantly welcoming setting.

A Culinary Journey with Louis M. Martini

This particular evening was an exquisite journey of flavors, where Chef Surla’s creative genius met the distinguished wines of Louis M. Martini, a proud Gallo Company brand. Every dish was a testament to his innovative spirit, perfectly paired to elevate the unique characteristics of each wine.

Here’s a peek at the incredible menu:

Appetizers: Bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with bleu cheese & microgreens, alongside local sweet watermelon with feta, Sciabica EVOO, and sea salt. Both served with a delightful J Cuvee Brut.

First Course: A vibrant Panzanella featuring local heirloom tomatoes, capers, arugula on hand-cut rustic bread with goat cheese and red wine vinaigrette. Paired with Massican, Annia.

Second Course: Perfectly pan-seared scallops accompanied by local white corn risotto cakes, tomato confit, and delicate popcorn shoots. A true revelation with the 2021 Gryphon, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Third Course (Air & Sea): Pan-seared local squab served alongside luscious lobster ravioli with a rich lobster cream and port reduction. Paired beautifully with the Sonoma County Monte Rosso, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Fourth Course: Roasted filet mignon with paper-thin heirloom tomato carpaccio, pickled red onions, and a balsamic reduction with basil pesto. An incredible match for the Lot 1 Cabernet Sauvignon (and if you’ve not had this Cab…go find some and enjoy!).

Fifth Course: A delightful Cipponeri Farms Peach and Blackberry Crisp with vanilla bean ice cream – a sweet ending to a magnificent meal.

More Than Just a Meal: An Immersive Experience

What truly elevated this night beyond a superb dinner was the immersive experience. We were fortunate to have Tyler from ElevateEveryPlate, the local grower of microgreens, right there in the room! He shared insights into why each microgreen was chosen for its dish, explaining their unique flavors and how they enhanced the culinary creations.

Adding to the grandeur, the team from Louis M. Martini was also present. Lydia Tanner, Assistant Winemaker, followed Chef Surla’s description of each course with her insightful reasons behind the wine pairings, discussing the origins of the grapes and the meticulous care taken in every bottle. Plus, Associate Brand Manager Pilar Resendez was on hand to assist attendees with special orders for any of the wines served that night.

To say the event was a treat would be an understatement! The sheer wonder of having such a well-thought-out culinary and wine experience right here in downtown Modesto is truly special. We are lucky to have opportunities like this emerge now and again in our city.

Don’t Miss Out!

Keep your eyes peeled for more fantastic events like this! Surla’s Restaurant is already planning their next wine dinner in August, featuring the wines of Far Niente. You can follow them on Instagram for updates.

I would still recommend Surla’s ANY time for a dinner, whether it’s a cozy table for two, or a larger group of friends or business associates. Chef Surla, his staff, and the wonderful atmosphere are perfect for any occasion!
