Sankofa Theater Company presents: Joe Turner’s Come and Gone

Sankofa Theater Company returns to August Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle,” the playwright’s series of ten plays chronicling the African American experience decade-by-decade in the 20th century. Having previously delighted audiences with their productions of, The Piano Lesson, Fences, and Seven Guitars, Sankofa is now excited to present Joe Turners Come and Gone. Set in a Pittsburgh boarding house, it is the story of a makeshift family of people who come to stay, some for days, some longer, during the great migration of the 20th century’s second decade. Sankofa Theater Company brings to the stage the tale of the descendants of former slaves that have move in large numbers from the South toward the industrial cities of the North, seeking new jobs, fresh opportunity and new beginnings. Through August Wilson’s realistic storytelling we experienced, joy pain and hope during a time when the African Americans peoples were making a way out of no way. This riveting tale is told by this regions first African American Theater Company, Sankofa Theater Company.
