The week leading up to the fest is packed with activities, but the official event runs June 9-11, 2023, bringing gearheads, photographers, and nostalgia chasers to the heart of our vibrant city. Why? Our hometown hero, George Lucas (yes, that George Lucas) directed the classic film American Graffiti, paying homage to his teenage years in Modesto. The coming of age flick set in 1962 revolves largely around cruising, a pastime Modesto was quick to readopt every June!
Kicking off Friday with a cruise reminiscent of the good ol’ days, the official North Modesto Kiwanis American Graffiti Festival Parade winds through downtown Modesto beginning around 6 p.m. Festival goers of all ages openly gawk at classic rides rarely seen anymore (so don’t be shy about it). The throwback vibes continue to roll with guest appearances by American Graffiti stars Mackenzie Phillips and Candy Clark. It will definitely be a night the whole family will remember!
Saturday and Sunday’s big draw is inarguably the car show. Over 1,000 classic cars shine brightly in the sun, freshly washed and waxed at Modesto Junior College West Campus. You will want to wear your comfiest shoes (and perhaps track your steps for bragging purposes!) The show is open Saturday, 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 3 pm. Entry fees are only $10/person, with kids ages 12 and under are free. Dance to live music from the ‘50s and ‘60s, kick some tires (with permission) and talk shop to your heart’s content.
Looking to beat the heat for a while? Saturday afternoon at 2pm, head back downtown to the historic State Theatre for a Grease Sing-Along! We know you know all the words… time to let your “Grease Lightning” shine. Bonus points if you dig out your poodle skirts or leather jackets!
The Graffiti Summer kick-off, “Legends of the Cruise”, was even featured on KCRA News this year! Don’t miss out on all the fun that awaits!
